Workplace Protection Orders Submission

I've made a formal submission to the State Government supporting a Workplace Protection Order scheme for Tasmania (full submission below). It would give police and the courts real tools to protect the people who face the public every day. Retail staff, hospitality workers, customer service crew, council officers, property managers and salespeople. Everyday people who cop abuse and aggression just for doing their jobs.

I made this submission in a personal capacity, but it's built on what I hear and see every week. Residents tell me they're fed up, workers at shopping centres and right across our public facing workers are dealing with behaviour nobody should have to take. The law right now, doesn't back them properly, this scheme would start to change that.

As councils, we are not bystanders on community safety. When the State Government are writing laws that affecting the community safety, Council must be representing, advocating, our community must be heard. Too often councils stay quiet, that's simply not good enough.

A mayor's job is to speak up, to put Glenorchy's experience on the record where it counts. I didn't write this submission for a headline. I wrote it because the people who serve this community deserve someone in their corner, that's the standard. For Glenorchy, not for me.
