Empty Homes. I Want to Know Why.
While out in Chigwell I came across a number of brand new homes in a housing development that appear to be sitting empty.
So I had a closer look and started asking questions.
The development delivered 55 homes, with 31 for community housing and 24 intended for affordable housing sales.
Right now, at least eight brand new homes are being advertised for sale, between around $475,000 and $525,000.
The development was completed in 2024, so I want to understand why completed homes are still sitting empty in 2026, when these particular homes were first offered for sale and why eight have now been brought to market together.
I understand some of these homes were always intended for sale. That’s not the issue.
The question is why, around two years after the development was completed, we still have brand new homes sitting empty.
At a time when housing is so difficult for so many Tasmanians, we should be doing everything we reasonably can to get completed homes occupied.
I’ve written to the housing provider asking how many are currently unoccupied, how long they’ve been empty, what affordable housing sale means for these properties and whether there are other options to get them occupied sooner.
Sometimes you have to get out, look around and ask the questions.
I’ll let you know what I find out.
