I've also lodged a submission on the Sentencing Amendment (Publication of Criminal Activity) Bill 2026, the post and boast laws.

The idea is easy and should have been done much earlier. If you commit a crime, film it and share it to build your reputation, the court should be able to treat that as an aggravating factor, also I believe, if you film & share it, which encourages the offending, this should be a crime too. Queensland, NSW and Victoria have already acted and Tasmania shouldn't be last.

This isn't abstract for Glenorchy. Many of us saw the Northgate and Big W footage go viral. I've watched a fight break out while their mates filmed it and urged it on, with bystanders knocked over in the process.

The harm doesn't stop when the incident ends. The footage keeps it alive, humiliates victims and rewards offenders. My submission backs the Bill and makes seven recommendations to strengthen it.

It is not good enough that our community feels unsafe. When legislation lands that speaks directly to what our residents are living through, council must engage with it.

As mayor, I won’t wait to see which way the wind blows on these issues that affect our community. For Glenorchy, not for myself.

Glenorchy First.
