SAFER GLENORCHY.

SAFER SUBURBS, SHOPPING & ROADS

People deserve to feel safe shopping, walking through their suburb, visiting a park or travelling on our local roads.

Council’s Statement of Commitment on Community Safety needs to be backed by practical improvements people can see and feel.

If elected Mayor, I’ll advocate strongly for action on crime and safety on behalf of our community. I won’t sugar coat the reality or dismiss what people are experiencing. I’ll speak up, push for better solutions and press every level of government to do its part.

I’ll seek Council’s support for a safety audit across every suburb, informed by residents, local businesses, police and community organisations.

That means identifying poor lighting in streets, parks, playgrounds and shopping areas, checking sightlines and overgrown vegetation and reviewing where CCTV is working and where there are gaps.

I’ll push for a prioritised program of improvements, with clear responsibilities, costs and reporting. Good design and well maintained public spaces should help people feel safer and more confident using them.

I’ll also pursue practical responses to speeding and hooning, including investigating suitable traffic calming measures and camera trials with the relevant authorities.

Council cannot enforce criminal law, but it can improve the spaces it manages and be a strong voice for our community. I’ll keep pressing for visible police patrols and coordinated action in our shopping precincts.

Feeling safe must be the standard, in every suburb.

KEEP GLENORCHY SWIMMING

Our community fought hard to get the Glenorchy War Memorial Pool reopened. Now we need to secure its future.

The repairs have bought us time, with Council previously indicating an expected further five to seven years of operation. We need to use that time well.

In the 2024 elector poll, 93.03% voted YES to Question 2, supporting Council seeking government funding to retain the pool and redevelop it into a modern public pool facility for the longer term.

If elected Mayor, I’ll seek Council’s support to refine the aquatic centre plan into a practical, staged redevelopment.

I want Council to test a first stage that delivers a new outdoor 50 metre pool while the existing pool remains open, followed by indoor pools and supporting facilities as funding is secured.

That means confirming what is feasible on the site, working through access and construction requirements and developing clear costs and funding proposals for each stage.

Securing the full project funding in one go will be difficult. A staged plan would give us specific projects to put before state and federal governments and a clear path to pursue.

The aim is to keep our community swimming throughout the transition and build towards the modern aquatic centre Glenorchy deserves.

Keep the pool open. Build in stages. Deliver the future.

GET GLENORCHY READY TO BUILD

People need homes and Glenorchy needs to be ready to deliver them.

Council’s Housing Statement of Commitment gives us a foundation. Now we need the planning, coordination and practical work to turn that commitment into homes.

With federal infrastructure funding opportunities coming, we must have projects ready to put forward. We cannot afford to wait until applications open to start preparing.

If elected Mayor, I’ll seek Council’s support for a focused housing delivery working group, bringing together developers, planners, government and the infrastructure providers needed to get things moving.

The job will be clear, identify what is holding housing back, agree on the actions needed and push for clear responsibilities and deadlines.

That includes progressing the road access needed to unlock housing around Showgrounds Road, working through access for development in the Granton Specific Area Plan and medium density housing along the Northern Suburbs Transist Corridor.

We need planners ready, road access proposals progressed and funding applications backed by clear plans and costs.

Council needs to lead this effort, pursue funding and keep our community informed about progress.

Get the plans ready. Get the right people moving. Get Glenorchy ready to build.
